What is MP3?

Sit down, relax, and have a tea…here’s a lesson on MP3

MP3 is the most widely used audio format as nearly all audio playback applications/programmes are able to open this type of file. The MP3 file was created by the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) and is abbreviated from MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer 3.

It’s known as a lossy audio format, which means they compress audio using algorithms that get rid of data. Further information on lossless/lossy audio can be found by clicking here.

File formats like MP3 will compress files by losing elements of the audio, rather than shrinking it. It will remove some of the data, and therefore lowering the bitrate, which results in a smaller file. Although some of the data is lost, it’s still possible to have fairly high quality MP3 files. A 3-minute lossless file, for example WAV, might be around 30 MB in size, the same file as an MP3 (compressed) would only be roughly 3 MB.
