What is a non-exclusive sample?

Do your samples only have eyes for you? 😍

If you’re using free or purchased samples or sample packs in your RouteNote release, or are using/remixing any content in your release that you haven’t created, these could be non-exclusive. Samples can be exclusive or non-exclusive, but we always recommend checking the agreement when acquiring the samples.

If the samples can be used or purchased by anyone, they are non-exclusive. Using non-exclusive samples may also affect your release’s eligibility for distribution to Content ID stores.

Non-exclusive audio can include:

  • Content you’re remixing that is not your own
  • Any backing tracks that are not your own creation (e.g., if the beat has been leased or purchased from somewhere/someone)
  • Creative Commons content
  • Public Domain footage/Public Domain live recordings
  • Speech samples that are not your own
  • Existing musical pieces (direct sampling)
  • Broadcast media (TV shows, radio broadcasts etc.)
  • Sample packs or loops
  • Audio from sound libraries
  • Audio from subscription based sample websites (e.g. Splice)

Some content is designed to be reused and some isn’t, so we may need to ask for proof of purchase or permission to use samples. This can be in the form of licences, links, or other documentation relating to the sample. You can provide this to our RouteNote moderation team at moderation@routenote.com, along with your release UPC.
